Product Manager Job Description

The job of a product manager is a very crucial role in today’s industrial world. Although each production company has slightly different roles for their product managers, in general, all product managers perform a similar role.

Roles of a Product Manager

A product manager performs several key roles within a production plant. However, there are a few topics under which the role of a product manager can be discussed. These are:

Production

A product manager oversees and contributes to the conception, and design of products within a production line. He is also responsible for the sampling and testing of prototypes. After a product has undergone rigorous testing, the product manager with his team assigns the market cost to the product based on the information driven from forecasts. Next, the product manager supervises the mass production, advertisement, and support of a product. Finally, the product manager leads a team of experts when a product is to be discontinued for any reason.

Operation

In terms of operation, the product manager also plays the role of a team leader. He spearheads the development of the operation plan by ensuring that the growth of a product is achieved. He does this by evaluating all the business objectives, which include, profit, revenue, and other financial indicators.

Management

The product manager is also heavily involved in the management and implementation of marketing strategies via planning, research, and, implementation.

Qualities of a Product Manager

For an individual to be a successful product manager, they should possess certain important qualities. These qualities include the following.

  • Transparency
  • Decisiveness
  • Prioritization
  • Informed Decision Making

Transparency

A product manager must be transparent in all his actions. He must create priorities and a clear roadmap for all processes within a production company. Transparency is crucial to the credibility of a product manager because of his need to explain his reasoning to several stakeholders. Therefore, a product manager needs to have the ability to be clear and concise to all the people around.

Decisiveness

A product manager should also have the ability to decide when needed. This means a product manager must stand his ground when he is sure of his decision. Therefore, for example, when a member of staff wants a process or strategy change but, is sure it will not be beneficial, the product manager should not allow such a change.

Prioritization

Due to the need to manage all types of resources at once, a product manager must have the ability to prioritize and weighing competing needs. As a result, a project manager must have the ability to scale all needs and assigning appropriate weight. In the end, he should be able to channel resources onto the most important needs.

Informed Decision Making

A project manager must have the ability to make informed decisions. This can only be achieved when he is meticulous when considering his options when deciding on issues. Likewise, he should also consult the people around him to ensure he is doing the right thing.
